How bilinguals solve the naming problem q
نویسندگان
چکیده
If different languages map words onto referents in different ways, bilinguals must either (a) learn and maintain separate mappings for their two languages or (b) merge them and not be fully native-like in either. We replicated and extended past findings of cross-linguistic differences in word-to-referent mappings for common household objects using Belgian monolingual speakers of Dutch and French. We then examined word-to-referent mappings in Dutch–French bilinguals by comparing the way they named in their two languages. We found that the French and Dutch bilingual naming patterns converged on a common naming pattern, with only minor deviations. Through the mutual influence of the two languages, the category boundaries in each language move towards one another and hence diverge from the boundaries used by the native speakers of either language. Implications for the organization of the bilingual lexicon are discussed. 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The relation between language and arithmetic in bilinguals: insights from different stages of language acquisition
Solving arithmetic problems is a cognitive task that heavily relies on language processing. One might thus wonder whether this language-reliance leads to qualitative differences (e.g., greater difficulties, error types, etc.) in arithmetic for bilingual individuals who frequently have to solve arithmetic problems in more than one language. The present study investigated how proficiency in two l...
متن کاملDoes bilingualism hamper lexical access in speech production?
In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that bilingualism may cause a linguistic disadvantage in lexical access even for bilinguals' first and dominant language. To this purpose, we conducted a picture naming experiment comparing the performance of monolinguals and highly-proficient, L1-dominant bilinguals. The results revealed that monolinguals name pictures faster than bilinguals, both...
متن کاملIs lexical selection in bilingual speech production language-specific? Further evidence from SpanishEnglish and EnglishSpanish bilinguals
In this study we address the question of how lexical selection is achieved by bilingual speakers during speech production. Speci®cally, we test whether there is competition between the two lexicons of a bilingual during lexical access. In two picture±word interference experiments we explore the performance of two groups of bilinguals, English±Spanish and Spanish±English pro®cient bilinguals whi...
متن کاملConvergence in the Bilingual Lexicon: A Pre-registered Replication of Previous Studies
Naming patterns of bilinguals have been found to converge and form a new intermediate language system from elements of both the bilinguals' languages. This converged naming pattern differs from the monolingual naming patterns of both a bilingual's languages. We conducted a pre-registered replication study of experiments addressing the question whether there is a convergence between a bilingual'...
متن کاملSemantic Convergence in Bilinguals
Recent evidence suggests that bilinguals’ lexical mappings for their two languages converge on a common naming pattern. The present paper investigates how semantic convergence affects the category centers and the category boundaries in the two languages of a bilingual. For common household objects, we found that the prototypes for corresponding categories in a bilingual’s two languages were mor...
